Prior to 1915, visitors to Yellowstone Park relied on an elaborate network of gracious full service hotels, lunch stations and tent camping companies. The park was in many ways an exclusive playground for the wealthy, primarily from the eastern United States and Europe. Arriving by train to the nearest outlying towns, well to do visitors were transported within the park by stage coaches and carriages. On June 7, 1915 park officials conducted a test run consisting of two automobiles carrying VIPs to determine if cars were feasible in the park. Almost immediately, tour buses were offered by Yellowstone Park Transportation Company and continued for almost thirty years servicing the rapidly changing demographics of park visitors. Buses and automobiles reached destinations much faster so the rather large number of hotels, camps and lunch stations were no longer needed. Unfortunately, several grand old hotels were demolished. As roads were improved the park entered a wonderful new era, open to the common people of America, independently driving their own cars. These pictures illustrate some of the beginnings of those changing times, a nostalgic time you can now experience, driving your own classic automobile.
